The Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa was born into a farming family. He began working in fashion collaborating with the top designers: Christian Dior, Guy Laroche and Thierry Mugler. His own fashion career really took off when he opened a small atelier on the Rive Gauche of the Seine that dressed the most fashionable women of Paris in the 70s and 80s. His acclaim as an international designer arrived in 1984, the year he launched his first ready-to-wear collection.
